Lecture 10 — Thermal properties of matter

Learning objectives

Students should be able to:

  • Use the ideal-gas equation and the gas laws to calculate and compare the states of a gas.
  • Read pV and phase diagrams, and calculate the heat in a phase change, including calorimetry.
  • State the assumptions of the kinetic theory and explain pressure and temperature in terms of molecular motion.
  • Calculate the average kinetic energy and the rms speed of molecules, and select the right model in an unfamiliar problem.
Contact 1 — Understand

Build the physical idea. Focus: Describe.

Contact 2 — Calculate

Develop the model and method. Focus: Represent.

Contact 3 — Apply and Consolidate

Apply, integrate and transfer. Focus: Explain.
