Lecture 09 — Temperature and heat

Learning objectives

Students should be able to:

  • Distinguish temperature from heat, and explain thermal equilibrium and the zeroth law.
  • Convert between the Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin scales and describe how thermometers work.
  • Calculate thermal expansion and the heat needed to change a temperature, including simple calorimetry.
  • Calculate the rate of heat transfer by conduction and radiation, and describe convection.
Contact 1 — Understand

Build the physical idea. Focus: Define.

Contact 2 — Calculate

Develop the model and method. Focus: Model.

Contact 3 — Apply and Consolidate

Apply, integrate and transfer. Focus: Apply.
