Lecture 04 — Work and kinetic energy

Learning objectives

Students should be able to:

  • Calculate the work done by a constant force, and the total work done on an object.
  • Interpret the sign of work and the meaning of kinetic energy.
  • Apply the work–energy theorem to find speeds, distances and forces.
  • Calculate the work done by varying forces, including springs, and relate work to power.
Contact 1 — Understand

Build the physical idea. Focus: Identify.

Contact 2 — Calculate

Develop the model and method. Focus: Quantify.

Contact 3 — Apply and Consolidate

Apply, integrate and transfer. Focus: Extend.
