Lecture 05 — Potential energy and energy conservation

Learning objectives

Students should be able to:

  • Calculate gravitational and elastic potential energy, and say when a force has a potential energy.
  • Apply conservation of mechanical energy to find speeds and heights.
  • Include friction and other forces in an energy equation, and say where the energy goes.
  • Find a force from a potential energy, and read an energy diagram.
Contact 1 — Understand

Build the physical idea. Focus: Identify.

Contact 2 — Calculate

Develop the model and method. Focus: Quantify.

Contact 3 — Apply and Consolidate

Apply, integrate and transfer. Focus: Extend.
