Lecture 06 — Gravitation
Learning objectives
Students should be able to:
- Apply Kepler's three laws, including the ellipse, the eccentricity and the speeds at perihelion and aphelion.
- Calculate with Newton's law of gravitation, including superposition, g above and below the surface, and weight against gravity.
- Analyse circular orbits: speed, period and the mass of the central body, including geostationary orbits.
- Use U = −GMm/r for energy conservation, escape speed and the energy of a satellite.
Contact 1 — Describe
Build the physical idea. Focus: Describe.
Contact 2 — Model
Develop the model and method. Focus: Model.
Contact 3 — Conserve and apply
Apply, integrate and transfer. Focus: Conserve and apply.
